From Table III, we see that the death.rate of London
proper amounted to 17.8, which "was lower by 2.6 than
the average rate in the previous ten years," and in fact the
lowest on record.
The death-rate of greater London with an estimated
population of 5,948,300, was 16.5, or over 3 per thousand
less than in 1893, and nearly 1 per thousand less than in
1879, when it was 17.3, the lowest rate previously recorded.
The death-rate of the 33 largest English towns was 18 .1,
which is 3.5 per thousand lower than that recorded for the
