From Tables VII. and VIII. it appears that the birth-rate
of the Mayfair Sub-District was 11.26, as against 10.87 in
1893; while that of the Belgravia Sub-District was 22.02,
as against 22.27 in 1893, and that the corrected death-rate
of the Mayfair Sub-District was 10.53, as against 10.74 in
1893, and that of the Belgravia Sub-District was 15'16,
as against 17.32 in 1893. It must, however, be remembered
that these rates are calculated on too small a population.
From the birth and death rates in Table VIII., I have
calculated, as usual, " the mean length of life." I use the
term "mean length of life" instead of "mean duration of
life" (as I explained in my Annual Report for 1890) in
order to prevent confusion, as the term " mean duration of
life'' is a technical expression, which means the length of
life as calculated by the life-table method. The "mean
length of life" stated in this report is calculated by means
of Dr. Bristowe's formula.
