Mr. Taylor reports that:—
"A house to house inspection has been made of all the
premises in Conduit and Maddox streets, which come
within the operation of these Acts, while a number of
inspections have been made in various parts of the district
as the result of special complaints.
The number of workshops and work-places inspected was 86;
of these, the sanitary arrangements of 75 were found
defective, the drains of 26 having to be reconstructed.
These 86 premises contained 188 work-rooms, 42 of which
were overcrowded, and ten in a dirty and unwholesome
condition. There were 540 persons found employed in
these workrooms, or 182 in excess of the accommodation,
taking 250 cubic feet as the minimum amount of cubic
space allowed for each person for such places."

have been taken to diminish the number of persons in
workshops so as to prevent overcrowding.

been inspected thoroughly during the year, and the sanitary
condition of many of them has been greatly improved,
notices having been issued, and the necessary improvements
carried out by the owners; but legislation is necessary to
compel the closing of all bakehouses that are situated in
underground rooms.
The slaughterhouses, of which there are three licensed in

shops, to which frequent visits are paid, but it has not been
