FORTNIGHTLY REPORTS.
January 18th, 1886.
In the fortnight that ended on the 9th day of January, 171
births and 103 deaths were registered in the parish. These
numbers are equivalent to an annual birth rate of 49.7, and
an annual rate of mortality of 29.9 per thousand of the
estimated population. The corresponding death rate in
London was 24 4, and the mean rate of 28 great towns 24.0.
These unusually high rates are partly due to delayed
registration at Christmas, and partly to increased fatality from
diseases of the respiratory organs, and greater mortality
among aged persons, arising from cold, fog, and north-easterly
winds which had prevailed during the preceding week.
The number of deaths from diseases of the zymotic class
was 6, viz., 5 from whooping cough and 1 from diarrhœa.
Diseases of the respiratory organs caused 41 deaths,—viz.,
bronchitis 27. pneumonia 10, and other diseases 4.
From consumption there were 10 deaths ; from old age 11 ;
and from heart disease 9.
Five inquests were held. One death was attributed to
accidental asphyxia.
