the dwellings occupied by the poor, I visited several of the
courts and streets where the houses are of small size and let
at moderate rents, and I am happy to say that I found very
few that were not in a fairly clean and satisfactory condition.
On the other hand the larger houses, which are let to several
tenants, were, not unfrequently, in a filthy state, equally discreditable
to the owners or agents, and to the occupiers.
Mr. Thomas has rendered me every assistance with his
usual readiness and courtesy.
