long period, and who would thus not be distributed to us by the

Tables VII. and VIII. give the deaths occurring in the
Parish, and Table IX. those of inhabitants of Camberwell who
died in institutions outside the Parish, both arranged according
to age, season and disease, and also as to the registration subdistrict
of the Parish from which they were removed whenever
this information was given on the death certificate; in those
cases where it was missing the deaths have been included
under the head of unclassified. They were for the most part
deaths of persons who had died in lunatic asylums, and the
only information forthcoming was that they belonged to
Camberwell. Table X. gives much the same information
only classified in a manner required by the Local Government
Board. It will be seen that in this table there are
two extra columns for rheumatic fever and heart disease,
and one for phthisis considered by itself, and not as coming
under the general classification of tuberculous disease. The
deaths from rheumatic fever numbered 18 as opposed to
15 in 1896, and were too few to justify my drawing any conclusion
from them. The deaths from heart disease, which
number 226 are 6 in excess of those for the previous year.
On examining the figures and contrasting them with
the corresponding figures for 1896, it will be seen accidental
or other violence caused 133 deaths, as compared with 115.
The deaths ascribed to developmental diseases (premature
birth, &c.) and to convulsions of infancy numbered 345 and
124, compared with 335 and 148 in 1896.
