MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
for
DEPTFORD.
To the Greenwich District Board of Works.
Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present to you the Annual Report on the
Vital Statistics and Sanitary Work for the Registration Year, 1897,
which terminated 1st January, 1898.
POPULATION.
The population of St. Paul's Parish, as estimated according
to the Registrar-General's method, for 1897, amounted to 108,778,
and that for St. Nicholas Parish is estimated at 7,946, making a
total estimated population for the two Parishes of 116,724.
BIRTHS.
The number of Birth registered during the year 1897 was
3,686 (1,869 males and 1,817 females), being a decrease from the
previous year of 177, and equivalent to an annual rate of 31.5 per
1,000 persons living. The Birth Rate for London during the
same period was 30.0, and for the thirty-three great towns 30.7.
There were 3,418 births registered in the Parish of Saint
Paul (1,747 males and 1,671 females), and 268 in St. Nicholas
(122 males and 146 females).
