What we do
The Collection Care team specialises in book and paper conservation, but also deals with paintings, film and video, photographs, and a variety of other media and objects. The team advise on and prepare material for transportation and loan to museums, libraries and other cultural institutions. They are also involved in the preparation of material selected for digitisation.
Collection care is complex, with environmental factors such as pest control key to the survival of materials. The Library has a conservation policy of minimum intervention to ensure that the historical integrity of items is maintained. There is a long-term plan, based on curator recommendation, to conserve whole collections in turn. In addition, items are prioritised for conservation based on demand for exhibition display or daily use in the Library.
The team is actively involved in research and development of practical conservation techniques; these are disseminated to the wider community by providing training interns and in publications and talks, including the Library’s events programme.
