The Observations "were originally drawn up in June 1812 in a letter addressed to Dr. [Colin] Chisholm, and were intended as an answer to his strictures on my proposed classification of contagious diseases: the substance of that communication to Dr. Chisholm has ... been preserved entire, though ... the epistolary form is laid aside" - p.
