Notes

By William Holder. In 1659 Holder had taught Alexander Popham, a deaf mute, to speak; when Popham later relapsed, Wallis restored his speech. In the letter to Robert Boyle here referred to, however, Wallis claimed the entire credit for teaching Popham, and omitted to mention Holder's contribution.
