Notes

Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of London, June 2011.
"A new approach to British interwar health policy, this thesis takes as its focal figure Sir George Newman (1870-1948), Chief Medical Officer from 1919 to 1935. Engaging with his writings, and borrowing approaches from biographical and intellectual, but also social, economic and government history, the project uncovers the deeper themes of health policy within the period. Following the line of Newmans vision reveals a fundamental preoccupation with the purposes and boundaries of the state, the nature of citizenship, and the ethos of the relationship between citizens and the state" -- abstract.
