Description

This image shows an in-situ Artisan 'iris clip', an artificial intra-ocular lens (IOL). An IOL is a lens implanted into the eye to treat conditions such as Myopia (nearsightedness) and Cataracts (where the natural lens becomes cloudy and affects vision).

This image shows a specific type of IOL called an iris clip lens, which is clipped onto the iris inferno. They are given to patients who have experienced complicated cataract surgery or who have lost their innate capsular bag due to surgical complications. IOLs rarely need to be replaced. This particular patient, a 70 year old man, regained almost full vision following surgery.

The photography seen here is an example of Anterior Segment Imaging, which concentrates on the front third of the structures of the eye.
