Description
The operation of pre-frontal leucotomy was introduced into the UK in 1943 and in that year six Retreat patients were given pre-frontal-leucotomies. Such operations at the Retreat in the early 1940s were performed by a surgeon from the Department of Neurological Surgery at Newcastle General Hospital. Between September 1943 and December 1945, 24 Retreat patients underwent pre-frontal leucotomy. The Retreat operating theatre was modernised in 1945, when it was said to be equipped to treat all surgical and medical conditions which might arise in the course of psychosomatic illness.
