Medium: Pen and ink Size: 37.7 x 23.4 Inscription reads, 'R L R C / Month of April / date 6th April 1843' 'Monsieur Tonson by the Corps Dramatique of the above Establishment!!!!'. The playbill lists the names of the cast in three languages. This item is currently framed for display purposes.

Biographical note

Richard Charteris was a patient at Crichton Royal Institution from 1842 to 1846. This playbill was not included in the original volume of Art in Madness compiled by Dr W. A. F. Browne. It was found in a scrapbook compiled by James Flett, who was Clerk of Works at Crichton Royal Institution from 1911 to 1939, DGH1/6/17/2. The playbill was folded and inserted into the scrapbook. It was removed and included in the rehousing of the art collection in 1989. A production of Monsieur Tonson was performed at Crichton Royal Institution on 6 April 1843.
