Cont: Includes bibliographical footnotes Note: John Hughes Bennett was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He began histological studies of tumours in 1842, and after seven years of work published his research in the above book. It carefully describes fifty-six tumours together with the clinical history, operation, and follow-up report. It also includes "one hundred and ninety illustrations copied from nature and drawn on wood by the author". Bennett emphasised the importance of microscopic diagnosis. "It is now manifest", he wrote in the introduction, "a microscope is as necessary to assist our sense of sight, as is a stethoscope to assist our sense of hearing."
