About this work

Description

Envelope inscribed 'Artie's pictures' and 'Artie's photos of French fleet at Malta', containing twelve prints of the French Mediterranean Fleet at Grand Harbour, Valetta, taken by Arthur Martin Leake (AML), 23-25 August 1914 (dated from letters held at Hertfordshire Archives). Some photographs appear to be taken from a seaborne vessel.

The envelope also includes seven small portrait photographs: three identical of AML in Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) uniform, and four identical of an unidentified RAMC officer, undated but evidently August 1914. See also AML/5 for a duplicate set of prints and associated negatives.

Biographical note

En route from India with the intention of joining the army directly in France, Arthur Martin Leake (AML) disembarked at Malta, narrowly avoiding detention by the Governor, to find a boat for Marseilles and thence a train to Paris. There he was assigned by the Royal Army Medical Corps to 5 Field Ambulance with Second Division and joined at Chaumes on 6 September. AML wrote home on 28 August, 'half the French fleet were there and we went on the Admiral's ship to call,' in his search for a passage to Marseilles; the harbour excursion was perhaps the occasion for photography.
