Notes

This item consists of three extracts lacking bibliographical information and all unpaginated, on Cow-pox, Inoculation and Small-pox. The accompanying signed letter from C.B. Oldman, addressed from Department of Printed Books, British Museum, London W.C.1, dated 30 September, 1948, to Cyril C. Barnard, Librarian, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Keppel Street, London W.C.1, identifies the source of the pamphlets as The Cyclopaedia ; or universal dictionary of arts, sciences, and literature by Abraham Rees, and published in London. According to Oldman, Rees's Cyclopaedia was published in 39 volumes issued in instalments from 1802-1819. The section on Cow-pox appears in Vol. 10 and was issued in May 1808; the section on Inoculation appears in Vol. 19 and was issued in 1811 or 1812; the section on Small-pox appears in Vol. 33 and was issued in 1816. The author of the article on Cow-pox is Mr. [John] Ring who is named in the final paragraph of that article : the names of the authors of the other two articles are not known. In a complete set of Rees's Cyclopaedia, in addition to the 39 vols of text are 6 vols of plates dated 1820 (but no illustrations accompany these articles)
