Description

Letters from Francis Galton to his father Samuel Tertius Galton, his mother Violetta Galton, and his sisters Adele Galton and Elizabeth Galton.

Letters from January to April describe his studies at King's College London, his plans to study mathematics at Cambridge, his accounts, and his matriculation.

From April to May the letters discuss Galton's trip to France.

Letters from May to July describe his studies in London, his matriculation, accounts, his proposed [abandoned] trip to Norway, and the plans for his journey to study chemistry at the laboratory of Doctor Liebig in Giessen, Germany.

Letters from July to August describe his stay in Giessen and subsequent journey down the Danube, with letters from Vienna, Budapest and Constantinople [Istanbul].

Letters from October to December describe the beginnings of his period of study at Trinity College, Cambridge, discussing his fellow students, tutors, proposed membership of the Athanaeum, areas of study, and his ill health.

Several of the letters feature illustrations.
