About this work

Description

He is in drag wearing a ballerina costume; posing on stage mid-dance. Arthur Sydney 'Tiki' Carpenter had been a member of the ANZAC forces in World War I and performed with a concert party called The Green Diamonds. After the armistice he joined the 'Smart Set Diggers' (an ex-forces drag troupe similar to the Splinters in the UK), which toured Australia. Tiki appears on the catalogued item in his ballet drag, dance being his speciality. He also toured the UK as a solo act: this publicity photograph from the late 1920s is printed in Leeds, and Tiki is billed as 'The Dancing Australian'
