Dr Ruth Porter contacted Pontecorvo after hearing about his "wonderful" Leslie Clarence Dunn lecture and asked if he would be interested on using his ideas on somatic cell genetics for the basis of a Ciba Foundation Symposium to be held in June 1978, "to honour Sir Gordon Wolstenholme's retirement from the foundation".
