Description

Collection of medical and miscellaneous receipts: including many transcribed from Dr. Alexander Read's 'Excellent and approved medicines and remedies [etc.]', London 1652. The transcript of Read's work occupies pp. 56-157. At the end 'Est scriptus per me J. Garside'. The book is recorded in the S.T.C. under R. 434: and is there dated 1652 [1651]. Pp. 160-162 contain receipts for horses. Besides the medical receipts, the compiler of the MS. had added a few epitaphs and verses, mostly in English, but some in Latin, pp. 169-171, 173, 185-the last 'An elegie upon the death of Sir Thomas Overbury ... in the Tower'. There are a few receipts added in 18th cent. hands, and many scribblings.

Physical description

1 volume pp. 39-200 + 5 ll. folio. 291/2 × 20 cm. Original limp vellum covers, with flap. The first 38 pp. have been cut out, and pp. 113/114, 179-184 are missing. Some leaves have been cut out after p. 200, and there are two mutilated leaves among the 5 un-paginated leaves: many margins are badly frayed and damaged.
