About this work

Description

Collection of cookery receipts, with a few medical and household receipts. Written by the same hand as far as p. 211, with a few additions by several hands [c. 1850]: there is an elaborate index, and the latest dated entry is 1834 on p. 204. A small paper-covered note-book, with 13 separate receipts for cookery and medical remedies, by various hands. Those in the notebook, perhaps written c. 1810, have been copied into the larger volume. Among these loose receipts, etc. is a letter dated 14 July, 1898 from H. M. Gilbert & Sons of Southampton, which refers to this MS.: 'We are sending...a M.S. book of recipes which we purchased yesterday and which we think you will like to have. It came from a good old family (an Admiral's)....' This letter is addressed to Francis G. Smart Esq., who is probably Dr. Francis Gray Smart of Tunbridge Wells, who died there in 1913.
