About this work

Description

Collection of medical, household and cookery recipes, many taken from printed sources. The entries are in two hands, an earlier (pp. 4-16), and a later one (17-107); one of the earlier recipes is taken from the Penny Magazine of 7 July 1838 (p. 13); some of the later ones are derived from newspapers of the period 1847-49, including the Manchester Guardian and Liverpool Echo (pp. 28, 34-35), and several press cuttings relating to recipes and other medical subjects have been stuck into the volume. There is a short section on baths (pp. 38-42). The later hand apparently continued to add to the collection until the end of the century. Internal evidence suggests this later compiler may have been surnamed Guest and been resident in south-west Lancashire.
