Preston, Mary ( -1723)

Collection of medical and cookery receipts.

Early 18th century

1 volume 6 ll. + pp. 5-370. 4to. 20 × 151/2 cm. Original green vellum binding. All before the second page of index, and pp. 1-4 wanting. Slightly dampstained throughout. The pagination at the beginning is irregular, pp. 226-269, 296-352, 358-370 are blank.

Purchased 1935.

Signed on the inside of the lower cover 'Teresa Herbert Lady Throckmorton'. She was the daughter of William 2nd Marquess of Powis [ -1745] who had married Mary, daughter and co-heir of Sir William Preston, who died in January 1723. It seems most probable therefore that she is the 'M.P.' who has signed many of these receipts, and that the MS. after her death came into the possession of her daughter Theresa who married Sir Robert Throckmorton, 4th Bart. [1702-1791]. She was his first wife, and died on June 17, 1723.
