Biographical note

The British Population Society (BPS) was established in Oct 1928 as the British National Committee set up under the Statutes of the International Union for the Scientific Investigation of Population Problems, also known as the International Population Union. The purpose of BPS was to develop scientific studies relating to the problems of population. It was not concerned with propaganda or politics. Sir Bernard Mallet was Chairman of the BPS from 1928 to 1932. When the Population Investigation Committee (PIC) was established in 1936 it was deemed to be a rival to the BPS. In 1947 the BPS was dissolved and absorbed by the PIC. Its assets and obligations were transferred to the PIC but its membership was not.
