About this work

Description

Manual on pregnancy and childcare, compiled by Maria Rundell, with various remedies for pregnant women and for children, The Retreat, 17 Oct. 1810. The work seems to have been written for a daughter, Harriet, about whom nothing is known. There is no evidence of publication. f. 1r.-v. remedies for whooping cough and ringworm. ff. 2r.-41r. observations and advice on pregnancy, childbirth and care of the new-born (with a sketch of an infant's napkin, f. 17r.). ff. 41v.-52v. remedies for pregnant and lying-in women. ff. 52v.-53r. weaning of infants. f. 53r. memorandum on the 'turn of life'. ff. 53v.-73r. observations and advice on the care of children. ff. 73v.-back cover index. Additional remedies inside front and back covers, with a recipe for 'plain pap', dated Pisa 6 Jan. 1828 (the year of Mrs Rundell's death), in an enclosure affixed to the back cover.
