Biographical note

Private asylums were subjected to external supervision by a growing body of legislation from 1774 onwards. Supervision of provincial asylums was exercised at first by Visitors appointed by the Justices of the Peace of the county in Quarter Sessions, and additionally, from 1842, by the Metropolitan Commissioners in Lunacy (and their successors the Commissioners in Lunacy 1845-1913 and the Commissioners of the Board of Control 1913-60). See W.L. Parry-Jones, The trade in Lunacy (London, 1972).
