Summary

The General Purposes Committee first appointed by Council in 1929. It dealt with routine management of the Society's general activities. It also set up various sub-committees and working parties, (see D.4). It was temporarily called the Executive Committee from Dec 1955 to Sep 1958. In 1975 it was replaced by the Committee of Chairmen - due to the recent change in the Society's name, Articles of Association and trade union legislation, (see also D.30). In Nov 1976 it was replaced by the Executive Committee - following changes in the structure and reduced size of the Society.

In Oct 1981 the Executive Committee recommended to Council that, in view of secretarial, financial and administrative problems within the Society, it should cease to exist, although it would still be available in cases of emergency. Membership was reduced to just the Chairman of the Executive Committee, President, Vice-President and Second Vice-President. As Ordinary Meetings had also been suspended, the Council became the main forum for managing the activities and business of the Society.
