About this work

Description

Collection containing 122 medical, alchemical, domestic and technical receipts, partly holograph and partly by various hands: being part of a mass of material collected by the Chevalier D'Éon for a projected: 'Collection de découvertes, secrets, médecines, remèdes, recettes, topoiques, faite par Mademoiselle D'Éon pendant ses différens voiages en différentes Cours de l'Europe depuis 1755 jusques en 1805'. Almost all the receipts, etc. are in French, but there are a few in English. The last nine pages (Nos. 1366-1374) contain two drafts and an English translation by D'Éon, of a description of a: 'Grille économique', designed to save coal in fire-places. At the end he gives his address: 'Mdlle D'Écon, No. 38 Brewer St. Golden Square [London]'. P. 46 is a holograph letter, dated London, 19/7/1791 from Madame Dauberval, enclosing a printed broadside 'Méthode pour prendre le kina dans les fièvres'. In reference to this on p. 48 D'Éon has written: 'Bonne lettre de Madame Dauberval ... Bonne à employer et à mettre à la tête de l'édition de l'ouvrage suivant que je me propose de donner au public. Collection de découvertes, secrets [etc.]'. No such collection was ever published. The Madame Dauberval mentioned above was Madeleine née Crespé, dite Mdlle Théodore [1760-1799], a dancer, who had married Jean Berchet Dauberval [1741-1806], a celebrated dancing-master of the time, in 1783.
