About this work

Description

The Society had close contacts with the BMA over many years and a large number of doctors were members of both organisations. In 1923 an agreement was reached which largely precluded the Society from medical-political action but gave it direct representation on the Association's Public Health Committee, (see D.5/2/1). In a subsequent review in 1939 these restrictions on the Society were lessened. In 1958 a recommendation from the Public Health Committee enabled the Society to obtain a direct membership of 12 instead of two as formerly. In 1969 with reorganisation of the Committee this was reduced to 7. In 1974 the Public Health Committee was renamed the Central Committee for Community Medicine. The Society was entitled to have two representatives on it. In 1978 this was reduced to one, although it was conceded that the Society's President could attend in addition as an observer.

Although these items relate to the activities of the BMA, they have been retained because of the relationship between the two organisations and because they relate to a period during which many changes in the structure of community health services and the organisation of bodies representing community medicine were taking place in the aftermath of NHS reorganisation.

M.5/1-2 belonged to Dr J H Whittles and M.5/3 belonged to Dr H M Cohen, who were members.
