Physical description

1 volume 93 ll. 8vo. 171/2 x 12 cm. Original vellum covers. A name has been cut out from the first leaf, which has been repaired: some leaves stained and margins frayed. A leaf or leaves are wanting after fol. 92. On the first leaf a coat of arms in red and black, with floreated decoration lettered J.A.S. On ff. 45, 46 are small pen drawings of urine-flasks. The notes of payments on fol. 36 and 68 are made by a certain Lactantio del Zuplia, who on fol. 68 states: 'Ricordo como io lactantio del zuplia comenzai andare a la botega de maestro maria di bernardino seruar...', dated 12 November 1526. The name of one of the main contributors of the extracts is found on fol. 35v where he says: 'Ego autem Jo. Ant. Scandolistius physicus talem facio unctionem et inueni mirabiliter operare'.

Arrangement

The papers are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking.

Acquisition note

Purchased 1930.

Finding aids

Catalogue description modified in 2014. For original description, see S.A.J. Moorat, Catalogue of Western Manuscripts on Medicine and Science in the Wellcome Historical Medical Library (London: Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine, 1962-1973).

Ownership note

The inscription on the first leaf apparently states that the MS. was acquired for 25 soldi on March 24, 1520: it is perhaps by the hand of the above-mentioned Lactantio del Zuplia. On fol. 79 another owner has written: 'Die 14 septembris 1613 D. Romanus Serenarius donauit mihi hunc librum. Bramno Santa Maria'. There is an unidentified armorial library stamp on fol. 2.
