About this work

Description

Household cookery book which also includes some medical recipes, mainly located towards the back of the volume.

Written in several hands, with an index located at the front, although not all the recipes are included in the index. There seems to have been an attempt to arrange the recipes by subject, but this was clearly abandoned at some point.

A large number of recipes involve the use of fruit, particularly apricots, cherries and gooseberries.

A few miscellaneous notes have been made throughout the volume, including a short poem underneath a recipe for 'Leek' on f. 79r, and a list of 'the vertues' of 'The Lady Allen's Water,' a treatment for plague, smallpox and all other infectious diseases, on f.157r.

Folios, 20, 49-52, 80-83, 96, 171, 176-179, 182-187 and 208 are all blank.
