About this work

Description

Collection of medical and cookery receipts, by various hands.

The second leaf bears the date 1669, but some of the receipts are probably later: the main hand writes in an illiterate script.

The volume seems to have been used as a Memorandum book of a jeweller and/or money-lender, as 7 of the last 12 leaves at the end contain notes of plate and jewels pledged, dated 1638-42. Among these is an entry of a loan of £200 on 'a great dimond ringe' to Sir Matthew Lister in 1641. This would be the physician to Anne, wife of James, I, and later to Charles I, who knighted him in 1636. He was born in 1564 and died in 1656, aged 92.
