About this work

Description

In 1958 the Society, like many other learned Societies battling with the Inland Revenue's claims and the Rating and Valuation [Miscellaneous Provisions] Act 1955, sought exemption from rates under the Scientific Societies Act 1843. In Oct 1958 they appealed to the Court of Appeal against a judgement by the Lands Tribunal on 14 Apr 1958. The Appeal Court affirmed the decision of the Tribunal and dismissed the Society's appeal in Feb 1959. The Society appealed to the House of Lords. Their appeal was dismissed on 21 Jan 1960.
