About this work

Description

Presented to Dr. A. Gordon, Chief Medical Officer of Mauritius. Enclosed: sketches of eucalyptus and cinchona, mounted on card. (The eucalyptus sketch has a dried specimen and description enclosed in a pocket on the back. It is not certain whether the dried specimen is actually eucalyptus).

The herbarium contains about 40 different pressed and dried plants and herbs. Many have diuretic, depurative or astringent properties, are used for urinary afflictions, digestion, treatment of diarrhoea or skin conditions, or as emollients or tonics. Some are common to that region of the Indian Ocean and others are native to central or south America or the Pacific.

The volume includes specimens of the following (transcribed as written): Cassia Occidentalis, Vinca Rosea Apocinaceae, Vinca Alba, Chenopodium Ambrosioides, Hydrocotyle Asiatica, Cassia Javanica, Guilandina Bondue, Periplocca Mauritiana, Plectranthus Maruitianus, Gynura Auriculata, Adiantum Rhizophora, Euphorbia Thymilalia, Toddalia Paniculata and Toddalia Anoustifolia, Helio Phythum Indicum, Sieoestechia Orientalis, Cymbopogon Schaenanthus, Poinciana Pulcherrima, Sida Mauritiana, Amaranthus Spinosus, Datura Stramonium, Ricinus Communis, Cocculus Palinatus, Dracaena Tessellata.
