Notes

This video is one of around 310 titles, originally broadcast on Channel 7 of the ILEA closed-circuit television network, given to Wellcome Trust from the University of London Audio-Visual Centre shortly after it closed in the late 1980s. Although some of these programmes might now seem rather out-dated, they probably represent the largest and most diversified body of medical video produced in any British university at this time, and give a comprehensive and fascinating view of the state of medical and surgical research and practice in the 1970s and 1980s, thus constituting a contemporary medical-historical archive of great interest. The lectures mostly take place in a small and intimate studio setting and are often face-to-face. The lecturers use a wide variety of resources to illustrate their points, including film clips, slides, graphs, animated diagrams, charts and tables as well as 3-dimensional models and display boards with movable pieces. Some of the lecturers are telegenic while some are clearly less comfortable about being recorded; all are experts in their field and show great enthusiasm to share both the latest research and the historical context of their specialist areas.

Contents

Segment 1 Griffin talks about the advantages of breast feeding and a short film is shown of a breast feeding mother successfully feeding her baby and winding it. Griffin describes how some mothers take to breast feeding easily while others need some advice. Another short film is shown in which an experienced breast feeding mother gives advice to a new mother, demonstrating the best position to hold the baby and other basic techniques. Time start: 00:00:00:00 Time end: 00:04:34:00 Length: 00:04:34:00
Segment 2 A short film of a mother breastfeeding whilst lying in bed is shown, then a film of a mother tandem feeding twins. The mother of the twins is interviewed. A close up of a suckling baby is shown and Griffin describes how its mouth should best be positioned. A short film is shown in which Griffin offers advice to a mother who is having difficulties breast feeding her baby. A short film of breast milk being expressed by an electric pump and then a hand pump is also shown. Time start: 00:04:34:00 Time end: 00:10:46:00 Length: 00:06:12:00
Segment 3 We return to the short film from earlier in which an experienced breast feeding mother is giving advice to a new mother, this time about milk flow. A further short film shows a woman describing how one of her breasts is more painful to feed from than the other. They discuss nipple shields and Griffin is also shown talking to a woman who is successfully breast feeding using a nipple shield. Time start: 00:10:46:00 Time end: 00:15:38:00 Length: 00:04:52:00
Segment 4 A short film is shown in which a mother describes how her baby, who was born jaundiced, took a long time to take to breast feeding but was eventually successful. She begins feeding her baby as she speaks. A further film is shown in which a group of mothers describe their feeding schedules and routines. Time start: 00:15:38:00 Time end: 00:21:40:00 Length: 00:06:02:00
Segment 5 Griffin sums up the lecture by recapping some of the problems new breast feeding mothers might be likely to face. A short compilation of clips from the earlier short films is played out to the end of the programme. Time start: 00:21:40:00 Time end: 00:24:58:18 Length: 00:03:18:18
