Description

A highly technical film for the anaesthetist, showing the apparatus designed to deliver continuous flow of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Ether is shown being added to the mixture of gases in various quantities. Diagrams are used throughout with short sequences of anaesthetised patients in between. The film is structured in parts, as follows; Preparation of Apparatus (showing correct flow meters), Induction, Introduction of Oxygen, then Ether, Maintenance. 6 segments.

Segment 1 The narrator explains that this film will show the workings of the anaesthetic apparatus designed to deliver continuous flow of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Segment 2 Intertitle: Preparation of apparatus. All the equipment must be tested in advance; gauges, flow meters and cylinders are all tested. This is shown in detail. The ether bottle should be refreshed every week - this is demonstrated. The ether bottle is warmed with a water jacket. The face mask is readied together with a rubber face harness. Segment 3 Intertitle: Induction. An intertitle explains that induction does not differ in any great detail to other methods and therefore this will not be dealt with in any depth. A patient arrives and his mouth is inspected. Intertitle: 1. The rapid induction of third stage anaesthesia using nitrous oxide alone. The apparatus is prepared to deliver nitrous oxide. Segment 4 Intertitle: Induction. 2. The oxygen supply. The oxygen is turned on and the mask attached. Intertitle: 3. The addition of ether. The ether tap is turned on; the bag indicates whether the patient is breathing regularly (a little every three breaths). There is laryngeal spasm and the anaesthetist pauses. Intertitle: Induction. 4. Light to moderate anaesthesia. The correct setting of the anaesthesia is shown, just sufficient to not cause cerebral damage. The harness is fastened and the patient's head turned to one side. This patient has an artifical airway inserted. Segment 5 Intertitle:; Induction. 5. Moderate to deep anaesthesia. As there is a sudden concentration of ether when the plunger is depressed beyond a certain point, the patient spasms, the ether is briefly turned off and the mask removed. Anaesthesia commences. Intertitle: Maintenance. 1. Rebreathing. Dosage received by the patient when the patient inhales and exhales is illustrated diagrammatically. Segment 6 Intertitle: Maintenance 2. Cases requiring additional oxygen. A patient becomes cyonosed and more oxygen is given. Intertitle: Maintenance. 3. Tissue saturation. An operation is in progress - and it is noted that the patient needs less ether. Nitrous oxide alone keeps the patient anaesthetised. The patient's eyes are shown.
