Segment 1 The narrator explains that despite modern developments in medicine and vaccines, insect-borne diseases still cause major problems around the world, and that pest control is needed. Drawings of Henry Wellcome's floating lab on the river Nile at the beginning of the 20th Century are shown, and modern research labs at the Cooper Company are seen. The narrator explains that the Cooper company have developed equipment and insecticides for street fogging, and examples are displayed. The research and development process is described, and scientists are seen working. Two types of spray equipment are described and demonstrated, one is smaller and for specific surfaces, and the other is part of a motorised vehicle that can spray large areas. The fogging van is shown driving around towns in the Middle East and Africa. It sprays insecticide around a marketplace.
