About this work

Description

One of a series of victorian trade cards issued by Foster, Milburn & Co. to advertise their Dr. Thomas' Eclectric Oil which was supposed to cure: asthma, scalds, colds, rheumatism, catarrh, bronchitis, throat complaints, croup and haemorrhoids. There are 7 testimonials to this effect. The illustration shows a young woman gazing soulfully upwards. She is wearing brightly-coloured, middle eastern garments and turban and is surrounded by a gold background. The oil was found to contain: spirits of turpentine, camphor, oil of tar, red thyme and processed fish oil.
