Film of treatment of syringomyelia (disorder in which a cyst or cavity forms within the spinal cord). Two operation sequences, each showing exposure of cervical spinal cord, aspiration of syringomyelic cavity, longitudinal division of the cord and closure of dura. Also shows the post-operative condition of several patients. 2 segments.

Segment 1 The intertitles note that the essential feature of the operation is to make an opening into the syringomyelic cavity. The film begins with the dura (a layer surrounding the spinal cord) exposed but not opened. The edges of the dura are retracted with sutures. The intertitles points out the symptoms of syringomyelia. A hypodermic syringe confirms the diagnosis. The spinal cord is divided and the cavity exposed. The cord is left open and the dura is closed. Segment 2 A similar operation is shown. Four patients are shown. Some months have passed since they were operated on. Two male patients and two females are shown with bare torsos.
