Description

Colour trade card advertising Ayer's Pills, probably from the 1880s, showing an heroic British soldier in a red jacket on a white horse wresting a tricolor flag (with 'Ayers Pills' across the white section) from a French soldier on a dark horse. A wounded or dead soldier and horse lie on the ground below them. The pills were supposed to be unequalled as a cathartic medicine and cure constipation, indigestion, dyspepsia, biliousness, heartburn, flatulence, loss of appetite, foul stomach, nausea, dizziness, headache, numbness, jaundice, diarrhoea, dysentery, disorders of the liver, skin diseases, piles, rheumatism, gout, neuralgia, dropsy, colds and kidney complaints.
