About this work

Description

A room in a peasant cottage, a window to left. Right, a man, seated on a plank placed athwart a half-barrel, facing to left, opens his mouth to show his teeth to another man, standing, presumed to be a dental surgeon. With his left hand the surgeon holds the seated man’s mouth, while in his right hand, lowered, he appears to hold a dental instrument. The seated man has a walrus moustache, and wears a brown coat, a red waistcoat, and green trousers. The standing man has reddish hair, spectacles, a green coat, a red neckscarf, brown breeches, green stockings. Both wear heavy boots on their feet

Creator/production credits

The subject appears to be ca. 1840 and Scottish. The painting could well be of the same period, or from later in the nineteenth century, by one of the many followers of David Wilkie, Erskine Nicol, etc.
