Painted by Cyrus Cincinnati Cuneo, an American-born war artist who worked in London. He died of blood poisoning in 1916: "His death was the result of a trivial accident at a Studio Party. While dancing, he noticed an ornamental pin falling from his partner's hair. As he bent to catch it, one of the lady's nails grazed his left nostril. A slow and deadly blood-poisoning set in, which ended in his death a month later" (Percy V. Bradshaw, 'Cyrus Cuneo and his work', The art of the illustrator, London: The Press Art School, Tudor Hall, Forest Hill, [1919? or 1922?], p. [3])
