About this work

Description

Correspondence primarily between G. R. Wyatt and Dr. Seymour S. Cohen regarding the exchange and analysis of bacteriophage nucleic acid samples. This file includes letters discussing an unknown nucleic acid component described as Cx, later to be identified as 5-hydroxymethylcytosine. There are letters discussing several papers, later to be published in Nature and The Biochemical Journal concerning the identification of this pyrimidine base in certain viruses. A copy of a letter dated 25th May 1953, written to S. S. Cohen, includes G. R. Wyatt's thoughts on the support that his work gives to theory of base pairing in DNA as hypothesised by J. D. Watson.
