About this work

Description

Correspondence regarding a Symposium on Nucleic Acids, held at the Regional Research Laboratory, Hyderabad, India, 16-23 January, 1964, at which Crick delivered a "'popular' talk" entitled 'The Structure and Function of DNA' (letter, 20 December, 1963, enclosing abstract).

Dr P M Bhargava, Symposium organizer, on learning that Crick some difficulty in finding the time to attend, wrote to him, persuasively (6 November, 1963): "This is just about the first international scientific meeting in the area of biochemistry or molecular biology being organised in the country. As you may be aware ... even biochemistry in this country is in its infancy. One of the main objectives of this symposium is to help cultivate an appreciation of the recent advances in biochemistry, molecular biology and related fields amongst workers in India, and stimulate research in the very important field of nucleic acids. Since your own contributions have laid the foundations of much of the progress in this area during the last so many years, and since you have a broad-based interest in science and its application, your presence in the symposium will be of tremendous benefit to the cause of biochemistry and molecular biology in this country, in fact to an extent which may be perhaps difficult for you to assess!"

The file contains 12 x b/w prints (secured to three cards) of some Symposium participants, including three photographs of Crick in conversation with colleagues.

Also included are a set of lecture notes (holograph) entitled "Molecular Genetics - the Ideas" and a tourist information booklet "This Week in Tokyo" (27 January, 1964, with the corner of page 38 folded for reference). An itinerary in the file shows that Crick was at Okura Hotel, Tokyo, 27-30 January, although no other details are given.
