[Report of the Medical Officer of Health for Stepney]

Vacant sites in the Borough were kept posted with notices warning
the public against depositing rubbish.
The Inspectors engaged in the supervision of food premises issued
leaflets to the occupiers on the Food Hygiene Regulations, 1955, together
with metal notices regarding handwashing and "no smoking".

HOSPITAL FACILITIES.

The undermentioned hospitals are situated in the Borough

The St.George-in-the-East Hospital in Wapping was closed on 30th
September, 1956, by the North-East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board,
which decision was confirmed by the Minister of Health, despite representations
made by the Council and other interested bodies. The hospital was
re-opened as a hostel at the beginning of December to accommodate 500 of
the' refugees who fled from Hungary. The London County Council Welfare
Department temporarily undertook the care of these refugees in cooperation
with the British Council for the Relief of Refugees.
STEPNEY BOROUGH COUNCIL INFORMATION SERVICE.
The enquiries dealt with by the Stepney Borough Council Information
Service during "the year" totalled 13,155, representing an increase over the
previous year of2,067 (16%).
As in previous years, a fair proportion of these enquiries was
directly connected with health and medical problems. and many others on
kindred subjects were satisfactorily settled.
