Of the deaths from alcoholism and cirrhosis of the liver 14 were of males
and 24 of females.
The deaths attributed to appendicitis numbered 2 as compared with 6 in 1913,
8 in 1912, 6 in 1911, 8 in 1910, 3 in 1909, 5 in 1908, 1 in 1907, 19 in 1906, 4 in
1905, 7 in 1904, 5 in 1903, 4 in 1902 and 2 in 1901. Of the deaths during 1914,
1 was of a male and 1 of a female. The deaths from peritonitis numbered 2,
both of males. Taking the deaths from appendicitis and peritonitis together
they were markedly below the average for the past 10 years.
Of the deaths from violence 78 were of males and 41 of females. Through
accident or negligence 106 persons lost their lives. In l5 instances street accidents
in connection with vehicular traffic were the cause of death ; in 13 of
these the persons killed were males. In 7 instances death resulted from burns
and scalds; 4 of these were of females. In 7 instances drowning was the cause
of death. The number of infants who lost their lives through being suffocated
in bed was 27, as compared with 25 in 1913, 26 in 1912, and 22 in 1911.
There were 2 cases of homicide, and 11 men committed suicide.
DEATHS IN PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS.

The number and distribution of the deaths of persons belonging and not belonging to the Borough in the public institutions situate in Shoreditch are as set out in the subjoined table:—

The wards at the home of the Good Shepherd were closed during the year for
the reception of infants, and the Babies' Home, Brunswick Place, ceased to exist.
Elsewhere than in public institutions, 11 persons not belonging to Shoreditch
died within the Borough.
