About this work

Description

These are outgoing letters by William Tuke. The letter at /2 is probably a copy which was kept by him in the Retreat papers. The letters of William Tuke, both here and elsewhere in the Retreat archive, were given back to the institution by his descendants. They all provide some insights into the early days of the Retreat Other letters by William Tuke, about the building of the Retreat, are in RET 2/2/1/1. See correspondence of William and Samuel Tuke on 1814 Bill to Reform Madhouses at RET 8/1/3/1 (RET 8/1/2-8/1/4 and 8/1/2/7 also have other letters written by Samuel Tuke about the reform of York Lunatic Asylum and other matters). There is also a William Tuke letter at RET 5/1/1/1. Transcripts of, and notes on, letters by William Tuke are at 1/10/2/1-2 and 8/1/7/2.
