The reformers of York Lunatic Asylum were active in the 1815 House of Commons Select Committee inquiring into abuses at Asylums. But the Tukes were also active on other aspects of proposed asylum reform; they were, for example, concerned that some clauses of the 1814 Bill to reform Madhouses would adversely affect charitable establishments like the Retreat.
