This list was found loose inside the volume of artwork found by the Health Board Archivist in 1983. Research carried out the Health Board Archivist and Dr Maureen Park (author of 'Art in Madness - Dr W. A. F. Browne's collection of patient art at Crichton Royal Institution, Dumfries', (Dumfries and Galloway Health Board, 2010)) has concluded that this list is somewhat problematic in terms of what if refers to. The volume found in 1983 contained 134 works of art and was possibly a combination of two of the original three volumes or a combination of surviving works from all three of the original volumes compiled by Dr W. A. F. Browne and referred to in his 1880 article, 'Mad Artists', published in the Journal of Psychological Medicine and Mental Pathology. A further suggestion as to the fourteen listed groupings is that they refer to Dr W. A. F. Browne's classifications of mental disease. A firm conclusion regarding this list has not been reached.
